In Internet Explorer 10, you can open and view PDF (Portable Document Format) files like in Google Chrome and any other web browsers. It is the latest version of Internet Explorer and it is commonly pre-installed in Windows 8 system.
When I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 8 Pro, I can’t view my PDF files in IE 10. It keeps on opening the Download window every time I drag a PDF over to a new tab. I was able to fix the issue by doing the steps below.
It is recommended to install Adobe Reader in your computer to get the ‘Adobe PDF Link Helper’ add-on for IE10. You won’t be able to view PDF files without it. But before you do that, verify first if the add-on is really missing in IE or perhaps, it is disabled.
Enable Adobe PDF Link Helper Add-on
To check if Adobe PDF Link Helper Add-on is disabled:
Step 1: Open Internet Explorer. Click the gear icon (Settings) at the upper-right hand corner of IE window.
Step 2: Select Manage add-ons. Find ‘Adobe PDF Link Helper’ under Toolbars and Extensions. If the status is disabled, select the add-on then click Enable button.
Step 3: Re-launch IE10 then open a PDF file.
Follow the steps below if no Adobe PDF Link Helper is listed in Add-ons window.
Install Adobe Reader
Step 1: Download the latest version of Adobe Reader here.
You can use any internet browser to download Adobe Reader such as Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, Opera or Google Chrome.
Step 2: Locate the installer in your hard drive. Right click the file then select ‘Run as administrator’
When you get User Account Control warning message, click Yes.
Caution: Exit opened IE window before running the installer.
If you get Window Smart Screen error, click Run Anyway.
Step 3: Open Internet Explorer 10 after the installation. You’ll see a warning message like this:
The ‘Adobe PDF Link Helper’ add-on from ‘Adobe Systems, Incorporated’ is ready for use. Enable or Disable?
Step 4: Select Enable.
Step 5: Confirm if you can now view PDF files in Internet Explorer 10.
View PDF files
To open a PDF file in Internet Explorer 10, you can just simply drag the file to an empty tab. IE will read and open it immediately. It will take time if the file size is too big.
